Mine is an '86 - so has only the 4-speed gearbox. I haven't had any trouble with 65-70 mph on the highway, although it feels more comfortable at the lower end of that.
The main trouble with highways is the transport trucks. Those big 18-wheelers can really blow you all over the place.
I don't know about CA, but around here there is almost always an alternative to the freeways. It may take a little longer to get where you're going, but on a bike the journey is the best part anyway!
